Into the dark we go! Little Wilderness is excited to host our 2nd Annual Raccoon Hunt, a truly wild and educational experience for youth ready to explore the woods, learn about conservation, and build confidence through hands-on connection to nature. This event is designed for youth ages 10–17 and combines education, safety, and real-world outdoor skills in a supportive and unforgettable environment. We’ll start the evening with an informational session, where participants will:

  • Meet their guides and hunting dogs

  • Learn how dogs are trained to track and tree raccoons

  • Discuss safety protocols, equipment, and firearms (for future mentored hunts)

  • Explore what happens after the harvest — including skinning, tanning, hide prep, and the fur market

After our discussion, we’ll head out after dark for a guided raccoon hunt using trained dogs. While youth will not be handling firearms or harvesting raccoons during this event, this experience is a prerequisite for those interested in attending a future optional mentored hunt, where they may harvest their own raccoon.

  • Following the hunt, we’ll dive into fur processing and talk about:

  • Skinning & tanning

  • Selling to fur buyers

  • What to do with finished hides (crafts, taxidermy, etc.)

Why This Trip Matters

At Little Wilderness, our mission is to help young people build a lifelong relationship with the outdoors by fostering confidence, self-reliance, curiosity, and respect for wild places.

This raccoon hunt is not about the trophy, it’s about learning where our food and other animal resources come from, understanding our role in wildlife conservation, and developing skills that most modern kids never get the chance to explore. We believe that by meeting the dogs, talking with experienced mentors, walking through the woods at night, and learning the full circle of a harvest, kids gain far more than knowledge, they gain purpose, presence, and connection to something greater than themselves.

Important Notes:

  • Dress warmly in layers and wear sturdy, waterproof footwear

  • Expect muddy, uneven terrain

  • Firearms will be present and used by mentors only. No youth will be shooting during this event
